Program Overview
The Builders of the Future program offers Kahnawà:ke residents the opportunity to gain hands-on training in Carpentry, Electrical, and Plumbing through a combination of classroom learning, practical workshops, and real-world work placements. This four-year vocational initiative is designed to equip participants with the skills, knowledge, and experience needed to thrive in the construction trades. You’ll explore all three trades before choosing your career path, gaining accredited training and completing a six-week work placement with local contractors to enhance your skills and open doors to rewarding career opportunities in the construction industry.
Key Program Features:
- Explore Three Trades: Gain practical experience in Carpentry, Electrical, and Plumbing—three essential construction trades.
- Hands-On Learning: Learn by doing! Get direct, on-the-job training in a real construction environment.
- Accredited Certification: Earn credits toward your Diploma of Vocational Studies (DEP), a recognized qualification that opens doors to further education and career advancement.
- Real-World Work Experience: After completing your training, gain practical experience during a six-week work placement with local contractors.
- Career Development Support: Receive career counseling, job placement support, and financial assistance through monthly allowances and tool provisions.
- Opportunities for Further Education: For those wishing to continue their education, pathways to complete a full DEP in the trade of your choice are available.
- In-Community: The program is offered in Kahnawà:ke, allowing participants to receive training and experience locally without the need to travel outside of the community.
How the Program Works:
1 Training Modules:

- Carpentry Module: Learn the fundamentals of carpentry, including framing, finishing, and safety protocols.
- Electrical Module: Gain essential electrical knowledge, including wiring, circuit design, and safety practices.
- Plumbing Module: Learn plumbing systems, pipe fitting, and maintenance.
2 Work Placement:
After completing the modules, you will be placed with a local contractor for a six-week work placement to gain real-world experience and build industry connections.
3 Certification:
Upon successful completion, you will receive certified credits that count toward your DEP, helping you to pursue further education or enter the workforce immediately.
Who Can Apply?
The Builders of the Future program is open to Kahnawà:ke residents (Kahnawà:ke Band Number, and be listed either on the Federal Registry or the Kahnawà:ke Kanien’kehá:ka Registry.) who are interested in pursuing a career in the construction trades. Whether you are a recent graduate, looking to switch careers, or someone seeking to upskill, this program provides a valuable opportunity to gain skills that are in high demand in the local workforce.
