Ionkhinèn:rine’; Youth Cultural Leadership Program

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Kahnawà:ke (Onerahtohkó:wa/ May 26th 2025)
Kahnawà:ke Tourism has created a NEW youth leadership program called Ionkhinèn:rine’ (They/She leads them). The Ionkhinèn:rine’ program is designed to empower our youth ages 12-
17 through immersive learning experiences that celebrate our rich Kanien’kehá:ka culture.

“Our focus is on youth leadership development, storytelling, guided tours, workshops, and community engagement activities that foster a strong appreciation for Tsi Niionkwarihó:ten (our
ways). By creating personalized and interactive experiences, we aim to instill a sense of pride, responsibility, and understanding among our participants, and encourage them to be future
leaders in our community.” said Olivia Wakenhnhiióhstha Rice, Youth Cultural Leadership Program Facilitator.

The program also places a strong emphasis on building essential life and leadership skills. Participants will engage in hands-on activities such as assisting in cultural presentations, guided
tours through historical and cultural sites in and around Kahnawà:ke. They will also have opportunities to learn from community leaders and guest speakers who will share their experiences and teachings. Through mentorship, collaboration, and practice, our youth will develop confidence, a stronger sense of responsibility, and a deeper connection to their identity as Kanien’kehá:ka peoples. Ultimately, Ionkhinèn:rine’ aims to inspire young people to not only take pride in who they are but to become active contributors and cultural ambassadors for
Kahnawà:ke – today and for generations to come.

“Through this program, we aim to inspire and prepare the next generation of Kahnawà:ke’s workforce for careers that enhance our tourism sector, support the new Cultural Arts Center, and
contribute to the broader growth of our community” – Kimberly Kaniehténhawe Cross, Tourism Development Manager. Two sessions with 10 participants per session will be offered. Our 1st session is June 30th – July 11th, and our 2nd session is July 21st-August 1st. Registration will take place Wednesday, June 11th starting at 10am on Kahnawaketourism.com. A $50 registration fee per participant per session will be charged upon registering.
