Sugar Shack Brunch Event brings sweet results for Kahnawà:ke Survival School Students

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: –Kahnawà:ke (Enniskó:wa/March 30, 2023) On Saturday, March 25th, 2023, Kahnawà:ke Survival School (KSS), in partnership with Kahnawake Tourism, hosted the very first Sugar Shack Brunch sponsored by Playground – The Rail Coal Fire Bistro, netting over $3900 for student extra-curricular activities.  The students of KSS used their new maple syrup processing system in anticipation of this event and to supply the brunch with the final product of Maple Syrup. The students also offered various maple items for sale to the public. The event was well attended with 256 tickets sold, 91 purchased online and another 165 purchased at the door.

The event was coordinated by Kahnawà:ke Tourism in conjunction with the annual Maple Food Fest.  “We wanted to coordinate an event that could be attended by the public and as well showcase the work being done at the school for maple production. We hope that this event can be repeated in the years to come, we already have new ideas for fun activities to be held during the event.” Said Jordan Diabo, Tourism Events Coordinator.

“The collaborative sugar shack brunch was a huge success. It was so nice to see families come out to enjoy a wonderful meal with one another and explore our very own KSS sugar shack.  The students were able to showcase their unique learning environment and teach their own community the basics of sugaring. We are very grateful to The Rail-Playground Cares Initiative for sponsoring the meal and to the Kahnawà:ke Tourism for helping organize and coordinate the event. It raised a lot of money for activities here at KSS and we are grateful to everyone who came out to support KSS.”

“On behalf of Tourism, we thank all who volunteered to make this event a success and to Playground -The Rail Coal Fire Bistro, for supplying the food and making their staff available to cook and serve the meals.” said Trevor Diabo, Interim Tourism Development Agent.
